The saddest thing about Gone With The Wind is that Rhett really loved Scarlett

With maybe the exception of Rhett, the men in Scarlett’s life were weak and that’s WHY they were the villains. And the reason Scarlet at first hates Melanie and then comes to love her

GWTW, Is not a love story, I will die on that hill. It's the story of deep friendship between Melanie and Scarlett. which is why the story ends with Melanies death. I've read the book 5 times.

Ashley and Melanie were always planned. Just as Honey and Charles were planned to be married. Ashley led her on always knowing he would marry Melanie

Hated Trashely since I first saw the movie. He always came across weak wimpy and a user. He had no problem taking money from her and that should’ve been the last straw to see how horrible he really was.

I’m so glad someone else shares this opinion. Ashley kept Scarlett pining for him because he was never honest with her. Even when he told her he was marrying Melanie he didn’t say go and be happy.

I just finished rereading the book and I cannot express my hatred for Ashley enough. IMO he ruined her life. He strung her along because he was physically attracted to her and loved the praise. To the detriment of both their lives. I could go on and on about how much I hate trashley lol.

Scarlett didn’t love Ashley. Scarlett loved the idea of what Ashley represented, the Old South.

You also left out that when Gerald dies, Ashley tells Scarlett he 'woke up' when she left for Atlanta to get the tax money and realized he was living off of her and useless. Ashley wanted to leave and

Yes!!! The movie makes Scarlett unhinged, but she was reacting to his pursuit!

I think I fell even more in love with Scarlett in the sequel- which is not a popular oppinion. She grows up and realizes Ashley can’t get out of his own way. As she matures she owns her self

It is too easy to forget that Scarlett IS ONLY 16 years old, while times were different, she was still so young and if she loved him for 2 years that was such a tender time to mess with her heart

I saw the GWTW exhibit in Austin years ago. They showed some notes on what was happening with Scarlett, Ashley, and Melanie. IIRC, Melanie knew the whole time, but she knew that Ashley wouldn't leave

When Ashley and Scarlett had a memory lane chat at the mill before ashley's birthday party, Scarlet was having a vivid memory of a bridal path, harnesses jingling. They had quite a bit of unchaperoneedtime together. That alone would have given Scarlett the wrong impression.
