@elysiaberman: Let’s chat RECESSION INDICATORS. The Lipstick Index is a fun theory but current beauty sales show it’s just that, a theory. A lot of people believe that lipstick sales go up in a recession, it’s a way for them to feel like they’re indulging without spending on big ticket items like bags or shoes. It’s a little luxury, and it seems to be one that people are not interested in! #lipstickindex #beautyindustry #recession #beauty #makeup #creativedirector #lipstick
I think people realize were so overwhelmed and over stimulated by materialistic things !

In 2008, housing prices were half of what they were now - and so people could still afford to buy lipstick. NOW - we can’t even afford a home deposit, let alone a $50 lipstick

I feel like the beauty market has also been so diluted, everyone is coming out with a beauty line and there’s only so many lipsticks one can buy until they all look the same

I feel like maybe it should be replaced with the latte index. Fancy coffee is the new “luxury but affordable” little treat

When I interned at a beauty company in 2015-2016, dot com sales were up 20% year over year consistently AND in store sales were still up on almost every single SKU. That growth just isn’t sustainable

THANK YOU!! Also «we’re soon to see a recession soon because of xyz..» babes we ARE in a recession. We have been since like 2022(?), no one is buying anything because we’re broke

As a lipstick addict, I’m currently in a No buy for the foreseeable future. I have 20 lipsticks that are the same color so obviously I know what I like so no need of keep experimenting with new releases.

too many brands in the bubble. in fragrance particularly, the heritage & luxury brands are seeing their market share decrease as independent fragrances have their come up (and are receiving VC!!)

I don’t lipstick is relevant as most people don’t even wear that daily at all anymore. I used to wear tons of make up back then, and now am bare face daily.People have shifted their spend to wellness.

I agree! Sephora has also become an increasingly overwhelming place to shop. it’s messy and they also give more shelf room to brands i have no interest in buying from. not to mention the prices!

I just have staple products at this point and 9 times out of 10 I’m buying something as a restock

Makeup has also gotten too expensive. Drugstore prices are ridiculous these days.

The supply is huge, the demand should decrease bc of earlier binge buying and the prices have skyrocketed, both in makeup and everything else. Something's got to give

not only there's way to much out there, everything is so expensive! even drugstore brands are expensive because they're trying so damn hard to dupe the luxury brands

2008 was such a different world for beauty. it's such a different world now. people don't treat themselves to a new gloss like '08 because we have a million at home and we know we don't need it

My problem with shit like this is that no one thinks about why, they just see patterns & call it. But I'm wondering: How does WFH change this? What about beauty trends? People leaving the house less?
