@lookthroughhistory: Herculaneum is less famous than Pompeii but even more remarkably preserved. It was a vibrant Roman town on the Bay of Naples until it was entombed in molten mud during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Unlike Pompeii, the superheated wave that struck Herculaneum preserved wooden furniture, frescoes, scrolls, and even food in eerie, vivid detail. In 1982, archaeologists discovered the remains of over 300 Herculaneum citizens, who sought shelter in boat sheds near the ancient shoreline, when Mount Vesuvius erupted. According to legend, the town was named after Hercules himself, who was said to have visited the area during his mythical travels. “You could hear the shrieks of women, the wailing of infants, and the shouting of men... some were calling for death in their terror of dying.” - Pliny the Younger #Herculaneum #LostCity #AncientRome #Vesuvius #Pompeii #Roman #History #Archaeology #HistoryUnearthed #TimeCapsule #Hercules

I just learned that they didn’t even know it was a volcano. It was about twice the size it is now and covered in forests. They would go to the top to get ice and bring down to the towns

They were expecting help from the sea, which never arrived, in fact many of the ships sent to help the fugitives were unable to arrive due to the sea conditions

Imagine closing yourself up in there thinking you were safe and then experiencing the awful sensations that come with how they all died. Those poor people never stood a chance 😢

These are BOAT DOCKS the area shown was the PORT sea levels were higher then - they took refuge but the pyroclastic flow 1000°s of degrees HOT cooked them in the water

The fact that they were hiding in the boat houses for safety not knowing those exact boat houses turned into ovens with the rising temps. SO sad.

Historians thought that the people got out until one day they discovered them where we see them here. That’s mainly why we hear about Pompeii more

Imagine the amount of ash it took to bury that entire town. Jesus. The tons of ash they had to remove just to get to the lower levels.

I really want to visit this place or Pompeii. A tragedy for sure and haunting, but so much was preserved in the eruption. Like a time capsule

Genuine curiosity here, most bones after so long oxidize and turn brown, but these are white. Does anyone know why?
