@bradleyblair83: Abduction and adduction of the wrist are complex movements that primarily occur at the radiocarpal (wrist) joint and are essential for the lateral flexibility of the hand. Abduction, also known as radial deviation, is the movement of the hand at the wrist joint away from the midline of the body. During this movement, the hand moves laterally in the direction of the radius (the thumb side of the forearm), and the lateral (radial) border of the hand forms an angle with the lateral border of the forearm. The range of abduction is measured from a reference point where the axis of the hand (which lies in a plane through the middle finger and third metacarpal) and the axis of the forearm are collinear. Typically, the range of abduction does not exceed 15 degrees. Adduction, also known as ulnar deviation, is the opposite movement, where the hand moves towards the midline of the body. During this movement, the hand moves medially in the direction of the ulna (the little finger side of the forearm), and the medial (ulnar) border of the hand forms an angle with the medial border of the forearm. The range of adduction is greater than that of abduction, reaching up to 45 degrees when measured as the angle between the reference lines and a line joining the middle of the wrist and the tip of the middle finger. Adduction is more pronounced in supination, where the range can reach 45 degrees, but it is limited to 25-30 degrees in pronation. The range of these movements is minimal when the wrist is fully flexed or extended due to the tension developed in the carpal ligaments. These movements are important for wrist flexibility and are essential for various daily activities that require lateral movement of the hand, such as typing or using tools. @Anatomy.App #osteopathy #anatomy #osteopath #manualtherapy
