No one names this, but the manager who praises you most warmly can be the one keeping you invisible. Corporate women, you might recognise the moment. Your manager thanks you in the team meeting. Everyone turns to look at you. Your face warms, you smile, you say “it was a team effort”, and the chance to say what you actually did passes in about two seconds. If I were a toxic manager and wanted to stop a capable woman from ever being seen as ready for more, here is the playbook I would run: 1️⃣ I’d let her run the project end to end long enough that she cares deeply about it. 2️⃣ I’d take the key update meeting myself. “I’ll handle that conversation; you focus on delivery.” It sounds protective. It is positioning theft. 3️⃣ I’d present her work using “we” when there was no “we”. By the time it lands, the people deciding who moves forward think I drove it. 4️⃣ I’d praise her publicly in our team meeting. “Couldn’t have done it without her.” Warm. Kind. Useless, because that is not the room where decisions about her get made. 5️⃣ I’d tell her she is “so close” and that I’m “fighting for her behind the scenes”. I’m not. But she will wait another year believing I am. Every move looks generous. That is why it works. 👀 Here is what it costs you in the room. Each time the “we” goes unchallenged, the people watching file you as the one who delivers, not the one whose thinking drove it. And when your name comes up in the room you are not in, nobody there has heard you explain your own work. 🧠 That is not naivety on your part. It is a pattern built into how many organisations work, and it runs best on women who were taught that naming their own contribution was boastful. What took me years to see clearly is what I now help women spot in weeks. 👇 If you are tired of hearing your own work described back to you as “we”, comment VISIBILITY and I will send you the Visibility Shift Framework. It gives you the words to name your contribution in the room before someone else names it for you. #YouDontNeedPermissionToRise #CorporateWomen #WorkplaceBoundaries #CommunicationSkills
