@sophiemorrisofficial: When you’re picking up garlic in the supermarket, have a quick look at the label— most of the time supermarket garlic is from China. Firstly - garlic grown in China has travelled a long way to reach Irish and UK supermarket shelves, and secondly - the farming standards are very different. Chinese garlic can be treated with certain chemicals that wouldn’t be allowed under EU regulations. Essentially garlic grown in the EU would be grown under much stricter regulations. Thats why checking the label when buying garlic and swapping to Spanish garlic is a really clever swap. It also tastes much nicer and doesn’t have to travel as far so better from a sustainability point of view also. Such a small shift, but one that’s worth making. A really clever swap to look out for next time you’re doing your shop 🧄 #sophiesswaps #cleverswaps #readlabels
does the food imported not have to meet an EU standard?

Surely if the item is being imported in to the EU / UK, it would need to pass local standards? I agree with shopping local but this seems like misinformation

Well you kind of contradicted yourself. How product that contains something not allowed in EU can land up on the shelf of EU shop? Please explain further.P.S. I am 100% sure garlic from easter EU would be 3 times cheaper and richer in taste than any garlic in shops in IRL at the moment.

Why don’t the “growing” regulations also apply to items for retail? Surely if the EU restrict fungicides/ pesticides in agriculture they should restrict these goods for sale too?

I refuse to buy any fruit/veg from outside the continent of Europe, there’s no need and all those unnecessary air miles. And I agree that Spanish garlic is the best!

I always thought that if they were sprayed with stuff in China that's against EU regulations, that it wouldn't be allowed into Europe 😐
Even I grew garlic so why are we not growing it locally 😡 why would we buy fresh food from China 🥲

Good steer. I would also suggest that you give the bulbs a good squeeze - the cloves should be hard - don’t buy off there is any give.

Chinese garlic is often treated with chemicals banned in the EU, (REMEMBER WE ARE NO LONGER MEMBERS!!) and can be harmful. Spanish has a better flavour. Fact check it!! It's true!!
