@whileyouwonder: Does… does this sound like fun to you? 🫠 Neurotypical conversations often involve asking questions and taking turns in order to sustain social flow, rather than to seek specific information. This style of communication is typically enjoyed and experienced as rewarding (Stolk et al., 2015; Redcay & Schilbach, 2019). These conversational norms—such as asking questions to keep the dialogue going—can feel unnecessary or confusing to autistic individuals, who tend to use language more instrumentally (Crompton et al., 2020). Understanding autistic communication vs neurotypical norms is a big part of the self identification process. 🌻 #autismexplained #autisticcommunication #smalltalkstruggles #neurodiverse #autismassessor

Sooooo. No one interrupted each other? There were not 10 tangents? A deep dive into a side note? Three google searches? Stories told that are similar to the others to show understanding?

I’m ND. That’s not normal for me lol. For me: Someone tells an experience and I tell a relatable experience. Repeat back and forth.

This type of communication feels like a job interview and I hate it.

I don't understand where they are getting the questions from. When I'm trying it my questions are dismissed or treated as rude 😞

How do they remember what they want to say, though?? Can they just wait until someone is done and then respond later and know totally what topic was being discussed?

I have adhd and the first half of that scenario is my life 😂. And I worry every time that I’m talking too much and keep wondering how they have so many questions and why I can’t do the same in reverse.

I was a hairstylist for 17 years and that part of my job was always so draining and felt so performative but it's aggressively expected by clients. I actually had people give me bad reviews (1/3)

I had to teach myself to ask questions to keep them talking instead of telling g a relatable experience coz ppl thought I was being self centered

As a ND, i feel like our version of asking questions is sharing our own experience to demonstrate our understanding of theirs, and the response being either "Exactly!" or "Yes, plus this...."

That long on one topic. I want to start with "my weekend" and end with "you need to stand up for yourself because how Becky slandered you from beyond the grave is so Becky and you have to clear that"

I do this - the NT type convos - with NTs but it’s a learned behavior that I find very difficult! It’s so much easier to communicate with a fellow ND.

I find I ask too many questions. Not in a nosey way, but because I don’t know what else to do. I’ll over ask, if that makes sense. Anyone else do that

I’ve become so self aware since being diagnosed, I literally freeze in conversations. When am I supposed to talk? I wish I could go back to my ignorant before knowing all the things self.
