The shelter’s conditions are inhumane - no vaccinations on intake, inadequate sanitation, cold weather and constant stress have created a perfect storm of disease and despair. Duchess is just one of many victims, a tiny, innocent life caught in a cycle of neglect and suffering. As I look at her, I’m met with a gaze that’s both pleading and resigned. She’s given up hope, and it’s crushing me. I want to scream at her prior owners and against the system that’s failed her so spectacularly. But all I can do is sit here, bearing witness to her suffering, and hoping against hope that someone will come to her rescue before it’s too late.
