Pen Ran (Khmer: ប៉ែន រ៉ន), also known as Pan Ron, was a prominent Cambodian singer and songwriter who rose to fame in the 1960s and early 1970s. Born around 1944 in Battambang Province, Cambodia, she attended the same school as Ros Serey Sothea, another celebrated singer of that era. Renowned for her versatility, Pen Ran's repertoire spanned traditional Cambodian music, rock, twist, cha-cha-cha, agogo, mambo, madizon, jazz, and folk. Her dynamic performances, characterized by animated dancing and flirtatious lyrics, challenged conventional norms and introduced Western musical influences to Cambodian audiences. This bold approach positioned her as a "worldly, wise-cracking foil" to her more reserved contemporaries. Throughout her career, Pen Ran collaborated with notable artists, including Sinn Sisamouth, and produced numerous songs, many of which she wrote herself. Despite her success, she remained unmarried into her early thirties, a rarity in Cambodian society at the time. She addressed this in her song "I'm 31," responding to Ros Serey Sothea's hit "I'm 16." Pen Ran's contributions left an indelible mark on Cambodian music, blending traditional sounds with contemporary styles and paving the way for future artists. Tragically, Pen Ran disappeared during the Khmer Rouge regime in the late 1970s.
