Exton - Old Winchester Hill, South Downs Way, Hampshire The South Downs Way between Exton and Old Winchester Hill is a slow 4.6km/2.8 mile slog uphill one way, and NOT ACCESSIBLE . The final ascent up Old Winchester Hill is a narrow steep gully, and should only be attempted with some seriously fit muscle and support team, and obsession to ‘walk’ every inch of the South Downs Way. Cyclists I met on a different section of The South Downs Way suggested starting from Old Winchester Hill and coming down hill to Exton would be the easier way to tick this section off. The South Downs Way splits briefly at Exton, into separate walkers and cyclists routes. The walkers route along Church Lane to the northeast Exton to Meon Valley Trail is NOT off-road wheelchair accessible as it is a narrow path between trees and large tree roots, ending in a flight of steps up to The Meon Valley Trail. The cyclists route leaves Exton to the south along Beacon Hill Lane, crossing straight over the busy A32, then following the road before turning left/north onto The Meon Valley Trail (South Downs Way). The route take you past a recent memorial stone, dedicated on 4th April 2022, to 27 soldiers and 6 airmen killed during a D-Day training exercise exactly 78 years before. At the foot of Old Winchester Hill DON’T be tempted to follow The Monarch’s Way straight up the hill as there is a kissing gate further up, but follow the South Downs Way waymarkers round to the eastern side of the hill until you get to the steep footpath to your left. Parking - Parking is limited in Exton. There is a parking area where the walkers route crosses the A32 used by walkers and cyclists. There is blue badge parking just beyond the main car park on Old Winchester Hill, Droxford Road, nr Petersfield GU32 1HW. Toilets - None. The nearest Changing Places toilets in Swanmore New Road Playing Field, New Road, Swanmore, Hampshire, SO32 2PF. There is another Changing Places toilet at Marwell Zoo, Thompsons Lane, Hampshire SO21 1JH but you may have to pay an entry fee Refreshments - The Shoe Inn, Shoe Lane, Exton SO32 3NT and Alan’s Coffee Van in the lay-by where the South Downs Way heads off downhill to Meon Springs after ear Old Winchester Hill #accessiblewalks #wheelchairwalks #familywalks #walksinhampshire #hampshirewalks
