I worked in theatres and I’ve seen three people in my two years working there going in to cardiac arrest for tooth related surgery. I get it! When they put you to sleep EVERYTHING is paralysed. You can’t even breathe for yourself.

Ok, I can understand a little nervousness and some anxiety but, after over 25 years of working in the operating room all over the US, this level of anxiety would not be tolerated. And I’m not trying to be mean or rude. The scenario is: if this is an elective surgery, (the patient requested to have a surgery performed,) then this level of anxiety is simply uncalled for. Surgeons schedule four to five surgical procedures in a day in order to get things done that need to be done. This doesn’t even acknowledge if that particular surgeon is on-call that day. Meaning during those four or five scheduled surgeries that an emergency may come in through the ER that has to be done before another scheduled surgery. To have someone that is scheduled for an elective surgery and have this much anxiety just because of the anesthesia….. most surgeons that I know would cancel that patient’s surgery, bring him or her back into the office, and have a long conversation with him or her about the reality of doing the procedure at all. If it a true emergent procedure then ok, I can justify a little nervousness. But, for a surgery that doesn’t necessarily have to be done for the patient to live, absolutely not! There just simply isn’t time and we are WAY too busy with our regular day, much less having to put everything and everyone on “hold” because the next patient is too anxious. We’re lucky some days to even have five minutes to eat something.

Do they not give anti-anxiety medications before the procedure in the UK? If you have severe anxiety like this in the states, they give you a medication in your IV that doesn't make you care about anything 💀
