Someone will apply for a job and turn it down because it doesn’t pay much. Which means they think their time is worth more. We’re simply doing the same, plus ingredient cost.

I think it’s because a cake lasts a few minutes but your hair color lasts 8+ weeks, carpentry work lasts years and years. I’m a baker so I understand, but other people do not.

Most home bakers don’t go to school for this but in order to get those jobs that you talked about, you have to have a secondary education. That’s the difference

Last cake i paid for was 325, and had no issue. It’s customized! I don’t argue, i pay the price. Don’t like it, go to Kroger. 😂

As a former home baker and I prefer to buy home bakers products, people act this way because the carpenters work lasts for so long and they get to enjoy for an extended period of time, same with the hair dresser. Unfortunately the time they get to enjoy your hard work is fleeting compared to the other examples you gave. It isn’t fair because you put your whole heart into it just as much as someone else. Just because the product isn’t able to be enjoyed for as long doesn’t mean it isn’t as valuable. The Walmart bakers doesn’t go to school for this for the most part either. This is one of the main reasons I stopped. Plus serious carpal tunnel. I’m sorry it isn’t fair 🖤

It’s not necessarily cake that’s expensive, & it’s not necessarily basic icing that’s expensive. It’s customization, hand-crafted decorations by a SKILLED ARTIST, & biz overhead. It. Costs. MONEY.💰

A big part is the illusion of time. A customer will see a hairdresser’s work in the mirror every day, a homeowner will notice the effects of a broken AC verses a fixed one, etc. Most people will only order a custom cake on their birthday which is one day a year, and the moment the work of art that is a cake is cut into, it’s gone. There’s a disconnect between how much the item costs and the time spent enjoying the item in a lot of cases! I wouldn’t sweat it though, there’s options out there for every budget and there will always be people who see the value of a home baker’s work and be willing to buy!

Agree !!! 💯💯💯 they would never walk into a cake shop like Cheesecake shop, Cake Mercent etc & negotiate a price with them. Their prices are fixed & you pay that ! Pay these home bakers their worth!
