Emperor Wen of Sui (Yang Jian) overthrew the Northern Zhou dynasty and established the Sui dynasty. In 588, he ordered his son Yang Guang, the Prince of Jin, to lead a large army southward. In the first month of 589, Sui troops stormed into Jiankang (modern-day Nanjing, Jiangsu), the capital of the Chen dynasty, and captured its last ruler, Chen Shubao (Emperor Houzhu of Chen). The Chen dynasty fell, and thus the Southern and Northern Dynasties period in China came to an end. During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, the Xianbei people successively established the Western Wei and Northern Zhou dynasties in northern China. Over time, through prolonged intermarriage and integration between the Xianbei and the Han Chinese, a powerful aristocratic-military bloc known as the

The core framework of this group consisted of the Eight Pillar-Dukes (Zhuguo) and the Twelve Great Generals. Among them were both Xianbei nobles and Han Chinese magnates, who intermarried across generations, forming a solid community of shared interests. Yang Jian's father, Yang Zhong, was one of the Twelve Great Generals of Western Wei. Li Yuan's grandfather, Li Hu, was one of the Eight Pillar-Dukes of Western Wei. The imperial genealogies of the Sui and Tang dynasties are essentially a history of intermarriage between Han Chinese and Xianbei. Empress Dugu Qieluo, wife of Emperor Wen of Sui, as well as Empress Dou (grandmother and mother of Emperor Taizong of Tang) and Empress Zhangsun (wife of Emperor Taizong), were all of Xianbei descent. Both imperial houses originated from the Guanlong military-aristocratic group that had risen since the Northern Zhou. Li Yuan's mother and Emperor Wen of Sui's empress were own sisters (daughters of Dugu Xin), so Li Yuan was a nephew of Emperor Wen of Sui and a cousin of Emperor Yang of Sui. After the Sui dynasty collapsed, the Tang dynasty was established by Li Yuan and his sons in its place. The Sui and Tang imperial clans can be said to be the nemesis of the Turks. How did they subdue the Turks? It was a two‑step process: the Sui used "division," while the Tang used "military conquest." 1. The Sui dynasty: Splitting the Turks through stratagem Emperor Wen of Sui adopted the strategy proposed by Changsun Sheng—"befriend the distant, attack the near; strengthen the weak, weaken the strong"—and exploited internal conflicts among the Turks to successfully split them into the Eastern and Western Turkic Khanates. The Sui supported Qimin Khan of the Eastern Turks, making him a vassal of the Sui, but they did not completely eliminate the Turks. 2. The Tang dynasty: Military annihilation and establishment of protectorates In the early Tang, the Eastern Turks once advanced as far as Chang'an, forcing Emperor Taizong to sign the "Treaty of Wei River" (Weishui zhi meng). However, the Tang dynasty revitalized its strength and, in less than three years, completed the conquest: · Destruction of the Eastern Turks (630): In the fourth year of the Zhenguan reign, the great general Li Jing took advantage of internal strife and a heavy blizzard among the Eastern Turks to launch a surprise attack on Mount Yin, capturing Jiali Khan alive. The Eastern Turkic Khanate fell. · Destruction of the Western Turks (657): During Emperor Gaozong's reign, Su Dingfang led a long‑range expedition, capturing Shahbölü Khan (Shaboluo Khan) and destroying the Western Turkic Khanate. · Subsequent administration: The Tang established the Anxi Protectorate (Anxi Duhufu) and the Beiting Protectorate (Beiting Duhufu) on the former Turkic lands, extending its influence deep into Central Asia.
