Most swimmers with sinking hips respond the same way. Kick harder. It doesn’t work, and here’s the actual reason why. Your hips don’t sink because your legs are weak. They sink because of what’s happening further up the body. The moment your head lifts even slightly out of its natural line with your spine, everything below reacts to that, and your hips drop. Kicking harder doesn’t fix a body that’s out of alignment. It just burns energy trying to compensate for it. The real fix starts with the head. Keep it in one straight line with your spine, not lifted, eyes toward the bottom of the pool rather than forward. From there, your body should rotate as one connected piece around its long axis, head to hips moving together, not the head staying still while the rest of the body rolls underneath it. None of this holds together without your core doing its job. A loose, disengaged midsection lets the rotation fall apart and lets the hips sink regardless of where your head is. A core that’s lightly but consistently engaged keeps the whole body working as one unit instead of several parts moving independently. Try this on your next length. Head in line with your spine, eyes down, core gently engaged, and let the whole body roll together around its centre line. Notice what your hips do without any extra kick. Alignment and rotation lift the hips. The kick was never the fix. Have you noticed your head drifting out of line without realizing it? Tell me in the comments.
