I never liked the excuse of it being “too expensive”. Germany rebuilt nicely despite being far worst off then us. The reality was that their was no government regulation and mismanagement of funds

Recently treated myself to a brilliant book ‘Bomb Damage Maps’ by Laurence Ward. Found out the council estate I grew up on was built because the area was completely obliterated during WW2

The architecture since the 1950s in London has been appalling. Apart from the West End, it’s as if developers can chuck any bits of different coloured Lego about it and Councils allow it.

Another reason is that we moved away from gold as money “holds value” to fiat printing money “value lost” and we couldn’t afford time or money to be creative or inspiring

There are many examples in London over the last 20 years, where lovely buildings have been knocked down and replaced by ugly unimaginative apartment blocks. Our architects need a kick up the backside.

It is sad but they needed to rebuild quickly after the war without loads of money or regulation in place to build beautiful buildings. In Bloomsbury particularly you see loads of different styles!

I used to live in a flat in Hounslow. The bedroom floor had a significant tilt. I always suspected due to the blitz. Bombsite.org shows four bombs landing close by.
