The calmest woman in the room runs the STRICTEST program. She is calm because she understands the power of her presence and of her absence, and she knows that access to her in ANY capacity is a prize. So when somebody mishandles her, she does not escalate. Enforcing consequences before a conversation is proper etiquette for the both of you. It is good for you because you are practicing self trust, demonstrating that you advocate for yourself when somebody crosses a line, which means you harbor far less resentment. And it is good for him, because you teach him how to treat you while you still have some love left in you. Enforcing consequences when you are already too resentful to stay doesn’t help anybody. A warning is not the same as losing access. Every warning you issue makes people take you LESS seriously, because what most women call a consequence sounds like, if you do this again I’m leaving, I’m going to my mom’s for three days. That is not a consequence. That is a pep talk you are giving yourself to prove that this time you will follow through, when really you are hoping to God that you won’t have to, because you really care. And all you are doing is delaying the one thing that actually changes the dynamic. Which is learning how to enforce consequences and understand what men ACTUALLY respond to.
