@janklabs: I’m building a GIGANTIC hugelkulture. This thing is 6ft tall and it will hopefully provide a lot of nice benefits for growing food on. Hugelkultures is layers of rotten wood covered with dirt. As the wood breaks down it will feed the soil and turn into more soil. It will also soak up and hold water like a sponge so it won’t need any irrigation. The Hugel mound also increases growing space by almost double because you plant on both sides of the 6ft tall mound. #DIY #offgrid #homestead #hugelkultur

youre missing alot of stuff, this deffinitly sufficient but you should add more biomass, like leaves, compost and eventuall fertilizer also remember to cover it with sumthin when youre done

You placed your thin layer of top soil on thw wood, and covered it with subsoil which lacks nutrients. You'll need a mulch top dressing of organic matter to compensate and avoid runnof.

I have three HK berms…I feel like you needed a few more layers of varying organic matter before the dirt…😳

I wonder how much of that soil will still be on top after the first real rainstorm and not down in between the wood.

I made small one. The hard part is enough dirt and compost to cover it. Grew tomatoes very well.

the point of these is to be able to use them for years tbh you might want to even let it sit for a a year or two... that wood is going to take a while to break down

Wait a minute if you pile logs 3 feet high and dig 3 feet down you say 6 feet yeah, you’re right

give it a good soak with kelp water, the nitrogen will help break down the wood. I also add nitrogen fixing bacteria and beneficial fungi than throw a mix of seeds including nitrogen fixing plants. The roots will help weave everything together

Every single mound I have ever made I layer it from bottom top with chicken manure from the chicken coop and grass clippings. Every other layer is the manure mix and the last two layers on top have dirt as well my mound have always lasted 5+ years. It mitigated the nitrogen leeching
