People kept on blaming that it's the aunt fault, but for me, I think it's more of Seita's fault because the aunt gave more food to her family because they were actually working despite the war and resources were low and the aunt was only trying to make them behave like example that one time she shushed them up when they were singing because she knows that some people are scared of some sort of any kind of sound because they were still in the middle of war. Seita could've either helped or not have run away if he was thinking more maturely, but unfortunately he couldn't because he was also still kinda young. Whole story short, neither at them is at fault, it's the war that was at fault

it's never the aunts fault. it's seita's fault for putting setsuko in that situation. plus it's his idea to live in the cave. he could've apologize to his aunt and stayed there. But either way, I think setsuko will still die. (Just an opinion)

people justifying their aunt’s actions because, ‘wartime makes monsters of good people’ make no sense to me. there are so many people who, in times of great hardship, are still able to treat others with love and compassion. their aunt had no right to castigate a toddler for desperately wanting to hold onto one of the only pieces of her dead mother that she had left. and their aunt’s neglect and lack of compassion *does* play a major role in why they die. she was willfully evil and negligent. resource scarcity is not an excuse to abuse and neglect children. ever. or anyone, for that matter. everyone suffers in times of hardship, and that’s why we have to take care of each other. she chose to shun and malign children, and her own family, at that, to protect herself. wartime is not an excuse for that. there are no excuses for that.
