Spartans are not godly warriors that were trained since birth and feared by everyone. The Spartan Hoplite was as skilled in combat as any other Greek, they were no better than your average Athenian, Theban, or Argiad. In small battles Sparta would lose 9/10 times because they lacked good cavalry and skirmishers. They would win large pitched battles not through might, but via the one thing that did make them special, their military organization. Spartans went down to the squad level which was rare for ancient antiquity. This allowed them to break up formations easier to flank the enemy, achieving victory in big battles. True Spartan Hoplites were also not as common as most of their military was made from the slave Hellot class. Spartans are cool but only became so due to Homer's Epics like the tale of the 300 (which is just pure Spartan propaganda).
