1. FAA requires a Remote Pilot Certificate (“drone license”) for commercial use. If you're using a drone for business / in connection with compensation, or for work — e.g. filming something you intend to sell, or creating content that earns money — you generally need the FAA’s Remote Pilot Certificate under Part 107 of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations. 2. Drone registration is required in many cases. Drones weighing more than 0.55 lbs (≈ 250 grams) must be registered with the FAA, whether for recreational or commercial use (but the rules differ depending on which you’re doing). 3. Violations can lead to fines (civil penalties), possibly worse. The FAA can enforce penalties for violations (flying commercially without the proper certification, violating flight rules like airspace, visual line-of-sight, etc.). Civil fines are common; criminal penalties may apply in more serious or willful violations.
