Great framing, Shawn; the "gadget vs. meaning" distinction is exactly where genre fiction earns or loses its literary weight. As a beta reader, the manuscripts that stick with me are the ones where the tech or magic system functions as a metaphor: a blaster that forces a pacifist protagonist to choose violence says more about character than any spec sheet ever could. Looking forward to seeing how you unpack this, especially the line between "cool worldbuilding" and worldbuilding that's actually load-bearing for theme.

I didn't think of those things but the only story I've written down on a word document (Stasis Eclipse) is sci-fi with some modern relatable themes (maybe), plus my villains are usually pretty
