When I started running, it felt different. I love tracking the data, it’s an essential part of my training. I also love making content, and I feel so lucky to be able to coach runners and make a living from a passion. Not a single day goes by where I take this for granted. However, running for me used to be a break from everything else. It used to be my own little thing. And if I’m being honest - as much as I advertise running as exactly that - it doesn’t always feel that way for me anymore. Last year, I turned my Strava on private mode experimentally. I’ve not looked back since. It’s given me the little dose of privacy I think I’ve been craving. Some told me I’m the problem and I should care less what others think, but it’s really not about that. It’s about limiting distractions and returning to the experience of running itself. I believe I can strike a balance here. I often go out and make a rule that I don’t shoot any content. I’d say 30% of my runs are “no content” runs. Over the years, I’ve formed a better relationship with the data (not having 11K+ people following my public Strava has helped this too). Now I think I’m gonna take it a step further and have at least one “naked” run a week. No data, no content. I know, it’s crazy that that’s crazy, but I’ve spent the last 6 years posting running tips online and training for ultras. My livelihood depends on me broadcasting myself online. I wouldn’t go as far as to say I wish it was different, because I don’t. But I do think I can still hold onto the things that I fell in love with running for, and those things are inherently my own :)
