Kudos to him for making the best! My grandpa had to drop out in 5th grade to work & care for his siblings. He became an avid reader and was so ashamed, he hid it from the family until his death

Have seen stories about girls being 12-13 and being married off to an adult because the parents wanted money or so the husband had to support the girl :(

My father was oldest of 12. He was forced to drop out to work in coal mines in WV. He learned to read with my siblings & myself when we were in elementary school. He ended up with a Community College

my grandfather, born in 1938 also had to leave school, he had a hard young life. He was the smartest man I ever knew and I wish every day he could have gone to university for maths and physics 😭

I remember almost every Saturday night my Papa (who also left school at a young age) would do the word scrambles in the paper and called it his homework.

My grandma always kept a dictionary on her, so the same reason. She was living alone in central London in 1936, at 13 years old. Dodging pdfs and other weirdos. She was always paranoid about her lack of education.

My great grandfather went mad because of what he had to do/saw in WW2. My dad still remembers waking up to him screaming from night terrors. The govt paid him a pittance. His wife worked 2 jobs 😓
