The first day of the New Year is called Maha Sangkran.Maha Sangkran marks the beginning of the New Year according to the traditional solar calendar. It is believed that during this time, the angel or “Tevada” of the previous year departs, and a new angel arrives to protect and bless the world.To welcome the new angel, Cambodian people clean their houses, decorate altars, and prepare offerings like fruits, cakes, and scented water. At temples like Angkor Wat, people come to pray, make merit, and build sand stupas as symbols of peace and prosperity.Khmer New Year is not only a religious time — it’s also a joyful celebration filled with traditional games, music, dancing, and water splashing, especially in villages and city streets.
