Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (full name: Taqī al-Dīn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥalīm ibn ʿAbd al-Salām ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad ibn Taymiyyah al-Ḥarrānī) was a prominent Salafi scholar, jurist, theologian, and reformer of the 7th–8th century AH (13th–14th century CE). He was born in 661 AH (1263 CE) in Ḥarrān, in the region of modern-day Turkey, and later moved with his family to Damascus due to the Mongol invasions. Ibn Taymiyyah was known for his vast knowledge of the Qur’ān, Sunnah, Arabic language, and the positions of the early generations (Salaf al-Ṣāliḥ). He was a follower of the Ḥanbalī madhhab but placed great emphasis on returning directly to the Qur’ān and authentic Sunnah, rejecting blind following (taqlīd) when it contradicted clear evidence. He strongly opposed innovations in religion (bidʿah) and called for reviving the creed and practice of the Salaf. Throughout his life, he engaged in debates and wrote extensively to refute theological deviations, such as the beliefs of the Jahmiyyah, Muʿtazilah, Ashʿarīs in certain theological points, and various Sufi practices he deemed impermissible. He also issued rulings in matters of jihād, governance, and societal reform, and his fatāwā addressed both everyday issues and large-scale political crises—especially during the Mongol invasions, when he argued that rulers who did not rule by the Sharīʿah were not fulfilling true Islam. Ibn Taymiyyah’s works include Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā, al-ʿAqīdah al-Wāsiṭiyyah, al-ʿAqīdah al-Ḥamawiyyah, al-ʿAqīdah al-Tadmuriyyah, and Darʾ Taʿāruḍ al-ʿAql wa al-Naql. His writings continue to have a major influence on Islamic thought, especially among Salafi scholars, and have been pivotal in shaping contemporary calls to return to pure Tawḥīd and adherence to the Sunnah.
