@allisonelang: I’ve done a lot of BRAVE things in my life, but wearing a bikini isn’t one of them. I’m not joking when I say that I’ve been told “you’re so brave for wearing a bikini” by people I just meet or are complete strangers to me. The worst is when they continue by adding “because I could never if I were you.” They think a comment like this is supposed to make me feel good about myself & my “situation” (as they call it), but it doesn’t. It actually has the opposite effect. By saying that a person with a disability or limb difference is “brave for wearing a bikini” indirectly suggests that we should or be expected to cover our bodies & keep them hidden. Everybody’s body is different - not one is the same. By wearing a bikini doesn’t make me brave, it just means I’m living my life as anyone else should: as themselves.
