You are often allowed to park perpendicular to official spaces (blocking in other cars, or "double parking"), provided you put the gear in neutral and handbrake off. That way your car can be pushed aside when necessary - amazing~! In automatic transmissions the traditional letters P-R-N-D stand for: Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive. You can park an automatic car in neutral, but some cars may have a special setting to do this. I was gobsmacked when I first saw this smart parking method - genius!
