The airlines is right. When the teen took an earlier flight, his seat on the original flight was no longer theirs. They don’t get to have 2 seats for one person. They were trying to be slick

they didn’t pay for a seat for the 2 yr old , so the airline was right . teen took an earlier flight therefore that seat is available.

if the teen switched flights, that means he didn’t pay for another flight. So yes, they no longer occupy that seat. It’s not rocket science the family is wrong.
