Post Courier - August 12, 2025 Lae Metropolitan Commander Superintendent Chris Kunyanba has issued a serious warning to all residents about armed groups moving through the city in large numbers, conducting violent raids on homes and businesses. Describing the situation as urgent, Superintendent Kunyanba revealed that police are running Operation Brukim Tulait to tackle mobs of 20 to over 50 people—sometimes including women and children—who forcibly enter rental houses and shops to steal everything in sight, from TVs to basic food supplies. “These groups operate like a coordinated force, using scouts to spy on locations late at night before launching their attacks,” he said The commander warned residents to be extremely cautious, especially between 10 pm and midnight, when these groups are most active. He urged communities to question unfamiliar faces and immediately report suspicious groups to police. “These aren’t petty thieves. Many are desperate, stealing rice and tinned fish just to survive. The age group ranges from teenagers to young adults,” Superintendent Kunyanba added. Police continue to patrol affected areas while coordinating security for the upcoming election processes. The public is urged to remain alert, share information, and work closely with law enforcement to keep Lae safe.
