Possibly China is selling some of their US debt to buy dollar denominated China ETFs which helps prop up their stock market. But basically dollars are worth less.

I was saying this all week. It wasn't feasible, nor logical for China to sell off US debt. I agree that raising capital for other investment opportunities, covering margin calls, etc. is more likely.

PM Carney said he wants to reduce Canada’s holdings of U.S. bonds. He still has to win the election on April 28th. If Carney wins, Canada will start selling off U.S. bonds to diversify Canada’s reserve.

The sudden market crash forced margin calls with hedge funds who had to sell treasuries in order to cover. The same thing happened in Japan. The 10 yr is now coming down. It was a blip.

China doesn't have enough to move the market that much. Yes $700B sounds like a ton but it's a $30T market. There would need to be concerted action of all major bond holders.

I figured as it would also destabilize their own currency to a degree I didn’t think they were comfortable with. US treasuries traditionally provide currency stabilization that’s hard to replicate.

Good post, makes more sense than some immediate coordinated sell off of a fraction of a fraction of debt. Generally there’s rational market reasons for big moves like that.

I would put money that it was China selling their bonds through their owned entities in Belgium. I have no doubt they own a lot more US bonds through their state owned and state influenced entities

$s were needed to meet margin calls, basis trade and yen carry trade reversals. Plus, one of JD’s good buddies is going belly up, maybe Citadel. Read, “The subprime crises and the yen carry trade”
