@mikebryckcomedy: Have you ever wondered why Orlando International Airport goes by the code MCO? 🤔✈️ Hint: the M is not Mickey and the O isn’t Orlando! 😉 In reality the IATA (International Air Transport Association) code MCO used to refer to Orlando International is a nod to Orlando’s military aviation history. From 1940-1947 and again from 1951-1975 what we now know as Orlando International (or more likely MCO) was an active military base. While it had several names over the years, the one that many locals identified with was McCoy Field. Named in honor of Colonel Michael Norman Wright McCoy (1905–1957). Col McCoy died in a B-47 crash and 9 months later the base was renamed after him. After McCoy field was closed and repurposed into a larger airport to accommodate an increase in tourism resulting from WDW opening in 1971, the code MCO was adopted to continue to remember Col.
