If you do it right, it's umami. The best analogy is it's like Soy Sauce. A little goes a long way, and no-one likes too much (well unless you grew up on it, and then you might like a lot). Cheese and vegemite on toast, or a cheese and vegemite sandwich is great too.

I’m Aussie, and did a home stay in Japan on school exchange. When I gave Vegemite to my host family they said it tasted like saltier version of miso. :)
