@happy.smallholding: Flowers play an important role on the veg patch! Here’s why it’s a good idea to grow flowers as well as vegetables: 🌱 Flowers attract a range of insects including pollinators which will also pollinate your vegetables, increasing yields, and predators which will help to control pest levels. 🌱 Flowers act as great companion plants, deterring pests from eating your vegetables. The nasturtium acts as a sacrificial plant, tempting pests away from your vegetables with its tasty leaves. Marigolds also serve a similar purpose. Herbs make excellent companion plants as their scent can mask the scent of other vegetables, confusing pests who are searching for their next meal. 🌱Some flowers are edible! Borage, sunflower petals, nasturtium flowers and leaves and other flowers can be added to salads & used to decorate cakes. Borage flowers look really pretty in ice cubes. 🌱 Flowers are vitally important for wildlife and supporting wildlife in any way we can is always a good thing 🐝 🌱 Flowers look nice! #raisedbeds #flowers #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets
