AI is not just a model race. It is an ecosystem. DeepSeek, Cursor, Grok and the rise of AI agents are important — but in my framework, they represent only the first layer of a much larger system. I call it Ray’s Six-Layer AI Ecosystem Model: Layer 1 — Applications Models → Agents → Tools → Applications Layer 2 — Compute Layer 3 — Infrastructure Semiconductors → Memory → Networking Layer 4 — Data Centers Layer 5 — Energy Layer 6 — Governance & Capital Inside Layer One, an important transition is already happening: Models provide intelligence. Agents turn intelligence into action. Tools connect that intelligence to the world. Applications turn it into economic value. That is why developments around DeepSeek, Cursor and other agentic AI systems matter. We are watching AI evolve from answering questions → performing tasks → participating directly in economic production. But Layer One cannot scale alone. More capable applications require more compute. Compute requires more semiconductors, memory and networking. Those systems require data centers. Data centers require enormous amounts of energy. And none of this can scale without capital, regulation, permits and industrial policy. That is why I believe looking only at the latest model leaderboard gives us an incomplete picture of the AI race. The evolution of Layer One is the evolution from intelligence → to action → to economic production. But the winners of the AI era may ultimately be determined by who can coordinate the entire ecosystem underneath it. A breakthrough at the top of the stack creates demand all the way down.
