Getting older doesn’t automatically make you more mature. You can be 35 years old and still struggle to take responsibility for your actions. Still blame other people whenever something goes wrong. Still react to criticism like a teenager. Still make the same mistakes you’ve been making for the last ten years. And I think that’s something a lot of men need to understand. Because maturity isn’t simply about how many years you’ve been alive. It’s about what you’ve learnt during those years and whether you’ve allowed those lessons to change you. You can go through a difficult relationship and spend the rest of your life blaming the other person. Or you can take an honest look at the mistakes you made and make sure you don’t repeat them. You can experience failure and convince yourself that the world is against you. Or you can ask yourself what you could’ve done differently and use that experience to improve. You can be disrespected, rejected or disappointed and allow those experiences to make you bitter. Or you can learn to handle difficult situations with more patience, perspective and self-control. Because the truth is, going through hardship doesn’t automatically make you a better man. Some men experience the same problems for years without ever questioning the part they played in creating them. And others go through difficult experiences at a young age, reflect on them and develop a level of maturity that men twice their age still haven’t reached. The difference isn’t necessarily what they’ve been through. It’s what they’ve chosen to learn from it.
