People are climbing over each other, pushing children forward, throwing bags into open doors — doing anything, everything, to get on that helicopter. Because everyone knows what happens to those left behind. 🖤 On April 30, 1975, Saigon fell to North Vietnamese forces, marking the end of the Vietnam War. In the final 24 hours, the United States launched Operation Frequent Wind — the largest helicopter evacuation in history. Over 7,000 people were airlifted to safety in a single day. But tens of thousands more were left behind. Vietnamese civilians who had worked with American forces, interpreters, government officials, ordinary families — all desperately trying to reach evacuation points as North Vietnamese tanks rolled toward the city. The scenes were heartbreaking. People falling from helicopter skids. Families separated in the chaos. Children passed hand to hand over crowds just to reach safety. American ambassador Graham Martin was one of the last to leave. He refused to abandon his post until the very end — clutching the American flag that had flown over the embassy. Those who didn't make it faced re-education camps, imprisonment and persecution. Many spent years trying to escape by boat — becoming known as the Vietnamese Boat People — risking drowning, pirates and starvation for a chance at freedom.
