Some victims do the work to heal, some don’t and after a while you can really tell which person does. I know it sucks that the work is ours but you cant escape it

Victims can become abusers if they choose not to process their trauma. A good example is generational trauma. A mom only hates her child because her mom hated her as a child. Doesn't change the fact +

The victimhood mentality often stays when a person doesnt have the internal capacity to own the issue (theyre role) and let go- so they own the trauma.. it becomes their identity. A shield.

This is so well put as talking about this gets sometimes shamed as victim blaming, when it's meant to be a call to look inward instead of deflecting. Such a sensitive stage when you are healing.

Anybody else actually never used the victim card but people were telling them they do? Because I aso think people confuse starving to be heard with victim mentality.

My hot take is a victim will continue to display victim behavior for as long as they feel they are the victim. In some cases the boy who cried wolf is still being devoured just quieter

I think there are real victims who go all righteous with it, and for some it's a temporary part of the journey. for others, yeah, it's definitely a shield to avoid authentic interaction and self reflection, a rejection of bring fully open to growth and healing

Is there a point where you stop the cycle, yes. But people won’t change unless they want to put in the work to be better and the work you have to do to get passed pain and trauma is tough and grueling

I sat in my victimhood for a good year as I healed. Eventually we have to grow and assume our responsibility for thriving. we can stay there but not forever.

The “starving to be heard” point is another video. What are we doing by saying that we HAVE TO be heard at any cost? Historically, isnt that an outlier? Are algorithms creating narcissism at scale?

I was treated wrong in a relationship and built whole identity around it. I know everything about methods that immature toxic people use. When my partner asked me if I wanted to try to fix things I found nothing promising in his words. he's been for a month in a therapy though. He wouldn't tell me I matter to him or how he wants to approach this. Just asked if I'm interested. I was furious because I expected him to answer my questions as I would. I fixated on that so much that I felt hoovering is taking place. I've been so much in the victimhood I craved him to take responsibility there and then. So much I couldn't notice he actually tried. Maybe it's the last time his words won't match his actions. But I've been working on rebuilding my self worth and couldn't recognize this is the same identity though. He broke up with me because I didn't say yes. I didn't see he just wanted to be chosen just as much as I want this. My identity was dying for 4 days until I had realized that it's stupid and I can forgive only if he actually changes. Why not give him a chance even though I saw why he reached out to me. But I wasted 13 years waiting for him to start the work. He just has. It will take a lot of time and effort but I already see how I was truly a victim but but of his actions but my mindset and my survival mode. I couldn't take responsibility for myself in that state. But always demanded he was accountable. So yes, hypocrisy. He did unacceptable things and this can coexist with me making mistakes.

Thank you, you have helped me tremendously. I've done so much work since I saw this video. It collapsed my identity and synchronized with a breakup that pronounced it. I can now show up as a new person for that relationship if we fix it or any relationship because I'm not bound anymore. I must say it felt like hell. for 4 days I wasn't able to eat anything and I wanted to d1e. Maybe because I was. I feel my self worth I've been theoretically working on for the past 2 tears finally emerged in a non -toxic, resentful, vengeful manner, just pure love. THANK YOU for your honesty and non standard messages.

I’m interested in hearing like where the lines are because there has been a definite increase in diagnosis around certain things and diagnosis creep is a real thing…… this feels really relevant to some people I know. I try to practice empathy but also when your harms start harming other people and like all that’s happened are awkward interactions shrugs

So true girl!! I read somewhere years ago that we as humans try to have an identity of ourselves. For that identity, we associate with well-doing groups like religious groups, countries, ethnicities, castes, life style etc. Because we want to identify ourselves and feel proud of us by associating with-for example- an ethnicity. If I am white then I’m automatically superior than others. This gives a sense of pride and identity. Even if I was a poor, jobless, good for nothing person, I would still identify as White and feel validated and superior than others. Same is with victim group. If we have done absolutely nothing in life, we would feel validated if we tell others what happened to us. We want to feel that we are good persons, and we are not like our oppressors. I don’t know if it’s a good thing or bad, but it does give hope to victims. Still can’t deny the fact you mentioned that it can be problematic if not dealt with. Shouldn’t be our only identity.
