Residential care helps the person develop a sense of independence within a safe and structured environment that can facilitate it. It's a benefit to the child, the parents and the family.

I will never judge a family for making a decision like this. Anyone in a similar situation knows how tough of a decision this was, but it for the child’s best interests.

he cld hire staff to care for his son in his home. but what he chose is BETTER bc his son can now make friends & live w/ ppl who are just like him. that is HUGE for his quality of life & self-esteem.

parents don't live forever. having him go into this environment unprepared in his 40s would be awful. he can make friends, learn life skills, all while still having his parents support him through it

I have a family member with a very similar genetic disorder and his now 19. The family are looking to do the same as his needs cannot be met at home, no matter how much you love them.

there are a number of people living in residential care who go and stay with their families for the weekends and go on holidays with them. it's not one or the other, it's what works best for the family

As someone who grew up in two family unit with one of us being severely disabled, this is a good choice even if people don’t want to admit it. It’s cruel to not have them settled in a good place

isn't not like he is being abandoned, and he will be taken care of for the rest of his life regardless. it's better to get him comfortable now in a facility that can manage his behaviors.
