@werner_bronkhorst: It may sound absurd but sometimes I really just play around with paint. Sure, I have somewhat of an idea of what I want to create (like you can see in my quick sketch) but the rest is up to chance. I had about 7 buckets of blue paint left over from my ‘WET’ collection which I splashed onto the canvas at random before smearing it in one repeated line. The paint soon looked like the shades of blue of a wave that’s just about to break and instantly I knew I needed to paint a surfer. I tend not to paint myself but this time I did! This artwork probably encapsulates the essence of my work best: thick paint smeared in such a way that it could be an abstract artwork in itself or a recognisable landscape upon which tiny figures are painted in detail.
