@natalieunderwater: โ ๏ธ๐ซexample of a freediving no-no๐ซโ ๏ธ โข Please donโt ever breathe air underwater mid-freedive as it risks lung overexpansion (pulmonary overinflation). Boyles Law states that at constant temperature, volume of a gas is inversely related to pressure. So as the pressure decreases upon ascent, the volume INCREASES. When additional air is consumed at depth and a diver surfaces without exhaling, over tension or shear forces from the expansion of gas will cause damages (notably pneumomediastinum - rupture of alveoli, aka air sacs, & surrounding blood vessels). Chest discomfort and/or pain, coughing, shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, change in voice, or a crunching sound listening to the heartbeat (Hammanโs sign). Here are 3 other things the diver did wrong: 1. You do not know the air quality: it may be stale, contaminated with gases, or have low oxygen levels. 2. It is critical to always have someone watching you to ensure you can get help if there is an accident, ranging from a shallow water blackout, bumping your head on the cave, or getting stuck! 3. The first thing you do when you surface should be breathing in air (recovery breaths), NOT spitting out a snorkel. Removing a snorkel upon surfacing puts you more at risk for blackout. Also, if you blackout underwater, your mouth will not be locked shut, allowing water to enter down your throat and into your lungs. โข It is our responsibility as divers to call out these bad practices & educate! Always do so with kindness & please dive safe ๐โค๏ธ #freedivingsafety #safety #underwatersafety #informative #educational #aida #padi #tip

you could do this and have no problem, but you would need to exhale when ascending so that your lungs won't expand to a dangerous level. That's why the first rule of scuba diving is to never hold your breath

They put their snorkel back in, which risks you drinking the oceans by accident, and if you pass out, youโre less likely to survive

Isn't air pocket is mostly CO2 exhaled by divers? Coz oxygen wont be able to generate by itself down there.
