The verse describes the sun’s course in relation to the cave, as observed by someone looking at it from outside. When the sun rose, it would “turn away” (تَزَاوَرُ)—that is, incline and deviate (from الزَّوْر, meaning crookedness, deviation, or inclination)—away from their cave toward the right. Thus, its rays did not strike them directly. And when the sun set, it would “pass by them” (تَقْرِضُهُم), moving past them from the northern side, so that it likewise did not fall directly upon them. In other words, the cave was situated in such a way that the sun did not strike their bodies directly, neither at sunrise nor at sunset, while they remained in an open space where light and air could enter. It is as though, in the morning, the sun moved around the opening of the cave from one side, and in the evening passed by from the other, without its rays striking them directly. Had the sun risen directly upon them, it would have scorched them. The cave was neither completely enclosed and dark, nor was the sun allowed to shine directly upon them. Rather, there was a precise balance between the two. And their actual position was inside the cave. They were in an open, spacious area within the cave: “while they were in an open space within it” (وَهُمْ فِي فَجْوَةٍ مِّنْهُ). They were not lying directly beside the cave’s entrance. What we know is that their position was such that the sun did not strike them directly, while the cave itself was situated in a way that allowed the movement of the sun to be observed in relation to it. This is one of the signs of Allah, سبحانه وتعالى.#quran #quranrecitation #quranquotes #Tafseer
