It was she who taught him the most human values: compassion, friendship, and the desire to help humanity. He repeated the promise that would become his legacy: "Bring happiness to humanity. To the humans who live on that planet... give them a chance to be happy." This idyll was brutally cut short when the Earth government, fearful of the power of Gerald's research, ordered a military assault on the ARK. During the attack, G.U.N. soldiers stormed the laboratory. In the chaos, Maria, prioritizing Shadow's life over her own, hurriedly put him in an escape pod to send him to Earth. At the critical moment, just before activating the ejection, a soldier shot him in the back. Her last words, spoken to Shadow from the other side of the glass, were a tender and heartbreaking "Forgive me, Shadow! I ask you to please give humanity a chance to be happy!" This trauma completely defines Shadow. His subsequent amnesia during his fall to Earth plunged him into existential confusion, but the subconscious memory of Maria and her promise (or her supposed revenge) became the driving force behind all his actions. In his eponymous game, it is the memory of her smile and her sacrifice that drives him to seek the truth, confronting the forces manipulating him with conflicting versions of his past. Maria's true legacy was not revenge, but redemption. In the end, Shadow discovers that Maria's genuine wish was for him to use his powers to protect humanity, not destroy it. This revelation allows him to transcend his biological weapon programming and embrace his free will, choosing to honor her memory by becoming a hero, the "protector of Earth" she always wanted him to be. Maria's influence lingers in Shadow's every decision. His cold, distant, and seemingly ruthless personality is a shell that hides the deep pain of his loss. She is the last vestige of a being who once knew pure love and witnessed the worst of humanity, but who, thanks to that same love, chooses to defend it. In Shadow the Hedgehog, she is the beacon that guides his path through the darkness, and in Sonic Adventure 2, it is her memory that gives him the strength to sacrifice himself, replicating her heroic act to save the planet, ultimately finding peace by symbolically reuniting with her in space, fulfilling his promise.
