You can't build healthy commerce with large enterprises unless the smallest ventures have space to grow. That's why we should always start by thinking smaller— especially when designing places for living and commerce. How can we create smaller units that welcome the tiniest businesses? How can we make room for smaller, more attainable housing? Also, small is inherently worthy. Even if a local business never scales up or franchises, it still contributes to the economy and meets real community needs.
