Writing extensive comments on each essay that most pupils ignore is not productive. Instead give whole class feedback on the top issues, showing how to improve, then get all pupils to respond in class

I had 127 kids, while the other English teachers had 95-ish. Department wide policy was a 5-day grading turn around. It was these comments or nothing!
