I've had this fabric for a long time, thanks to a friend who happened to find it. I always knew it would eventually become a late medieval Transylvanian nobleman's overgown, and it turned out I had just enough fabric to make it happen. The histtorical garment draws inspiration mainly from two paintings by Rogier van der Weyden—not because of their colours, but because they depict the international courtly fashion that influenced much of Central Europe during the mid-15th century. Rather than copying the paintings directly, I opted for a slightly shorter, fuller silhouette with less exaggerated sleeves than those seen in Burgundy and the Low Countries, resulting in a look that is more in keeping with the fashion of the Kingdom of Hungary and contemporary Italy while preserving the luxurious character of the original inspiration. Getting the pleats to fall evenly and create a balanced silhouette was probably the biggest challenge, and it's still something I'd like to refine in the future. As with most of my projects, this probably isn't the final version. I may eventually replace the hat or the belt as I continue refining the overall outfit. This should be seen as one plausible interpretation rather than the only correct one. It was by no means the only fashionable style during the reign of King Sigismund of Luxembourg, whose cosmopolitan court embraced influences from across Central Europe, Italy, and the Balkans.
