@leenaderm: Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is having a moment—and for good reason 🔬🧴 This naturally occurring molecule, made by our white blood cells, is a powerful yet gentle antimicrobial. It’s effective in disinfecting against bacteria (including dental/oral bacteria), viruses (including HPV - a virus that causes common warts and even cancers), and fungi—without irritating the skin or eyes. [Note: this isn’t used to treat warts once formed] 🦠 Used in wound care, dermatology, and even surface disinfection, HOCl is safe, non-toxic, and eco-friendly ♻️ Stay tuned to learn why all HOCl products are not produced equal 🔜 #hypochlorousacidspray #dermatology #skincare

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a weak, unstable, greenish-yellow liquid and a reactive oxygen species (ROS). It's the active form of chlorine in water and a major oxidant produced by the body's immune system to fight inflammation. HOCl is also used as a disinfectant and active ingredient in sanitizers. Production and properties: HOCl is created when chlorine dissolves in water and partially dissociates into a hypochlorite anion (ClO-).

For all its benefits, hypochlorous acid solution has one major weakness: it’s highly unstable. It remains stable only in a solution with a pH between about 4 and 6. The solution is still made using salt, water and electricity through the process of electrolysis. Within minutes of exposure to light or air hypochlorous acid starts to deteriorate back into salt water, making it useless as a disinfectant. If the solution were to get too acidic, it would start converting into chlorine gas. If it were to get too alkaline, it would gain a higher percentage of hypochlorite. This lack of shelf stability is the biggest reason hypochlorous acid sprays never became a staple of the cleaning-products aisle.

Using too much hypochlorous acid on your skin can have negative effects, causing irritation and sensitivity. Hypochlorous acid can also cause tissue damage in places where skin is already inflamed. Hypochlorous acid is used to treat drinking water and to disinfect swimming pools.
