@tandkaythespectrumway: Word problems in math are subjective to the context that they are used in. Technically her reasoning isn’t wrong and out of the box thinking like this is crucial for society. Unfortunately though this doesn’t line up with the public education systems agenda, and instead she was made to feel incompetent compared to others growing up. Can anyone else relate? #fyp #tandkaythespectrumway #autismawareness #autistic #latediagnosedautistic #actuallyautistic #audhd #asd #autism #math
it would be so easy for the test maker to add 1 word. how many seats remain EMPTY?

The implied is how many remain “available”. The word available is missing and being implied

Man you are explaining this terribly. The seats aren't GONE, they're just no longer remain AVAILABLE. "Seat" isn't referring to the chair, it's referring to a place to sit.

It's a semantic problem, not a math problem. She is 100% correct.

I had a similar situation where I answered in long form and they had to remove the question from the test because my answer made them realize the question wasn’t complete.

There’s 10, if 6 people sit in the 10 seats there’s still 10 seats, that remain at the table. It should ask “how many seats remain empty” for the answer to be 4

the thing is, we autistic people tend to overcomplicate those questions because we're used to have to look for subtext in EVERYTHING neurotypicals say. Nothing is easy, if it is we're wrong somehow

It's like it's physically painful for the people writing these questions to write something like "how many seats are available?".
