Duchess’s fragile body and pleading eyes haunt me. Her tiny frame wracked with coughs and her eyes dull with sickness. Just 10 days ago, she was spared from euthanasia in the nick of time, when a microchip was discovered. That same day, Junior lost his life in her place, a devastating reminder of the harsh realities of shelter life. But now, that brief reprieve is over. Her microchip hold has expired, and she’s facing the very same fate she narrowly escaped just days ago. Duchess cannot die when Junior, unintentionally and heroically saved her life. The thought of it is almost too much to bear. This deserving dog, who’s already been through so much, is now staring death in the face once again. The shelter’s conditions are inhumane - no vaccinations on intake, inadequate sanitation, cold weather and constant stress have created a perfect storm of disease and despair. Duchess is just one of many victims, a tiny, innocent life caught in a cycle of neglect and suffering. As I look at her, I’m met with a gaze that’s both pleading and resigned. She’s given up hope, and it’s crushing me. I want to scream at her prior owners and against the system that’s failed her so spectacularly. But all I can do is sit here, bearing witness to her suffering, and hoping against hope that someone will come to her rescue before it’s too late. Time is running out for Duchess, and I’m not sure how much more of this she can endure. #A814684 RESCUE EMAIL: SBAC.Rescue@dph.sbcounty.gov Devore Animal Shelter No 19777 Shelter Way, San Bernardino, CA 92407 Phone: 909-386-9820 Hours of Operation: Monday - Friday: 10am - 6:30pm Saturday - Sunday: 10am - 5pm
