@pt_with_jt: The chin tuck is a staple exercise in the treatment for chronic neck tightness or cervicogenic headaches. They are also a great way to PREVENT those things from occurring in the first place so let’s get this exercise right! Goals of the exercise: - strengthen the deep neck flexors (longus colli and longus capitis) - calm the nervous system by teaching the accessory muscles surrounding the neck to relax - decrease biomechanical stress on cervical spine during daily activity and weightlifting Technique tips: - Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth (disengaged the platysma muscle) - Pretend a rod is going through both ears and rotate your head back about its axis - Place two fingers to each side of your esophagus to feel for the muscles popping up into your hand - Integrate the motion with certain weightlifting exercises that may place some tension through your neck (pull, push exercises usually) It’s a great movement that can be incorporated into your daily routine with ease and will go a long way in protecting the longevity of your neck! #physicaltherapy #physicaltherapist #physio #physiotherapy #physicaltherapyworks #PTworks #physicaltherapyhumor #chintuck #chintuckexercise #neckpain #chronicneckpain #chronicneckpainrelief #physicaltherapytips

Could you do a video explaining the set of exercises designed to relieve TMJD issues? Chin tucks are included, and my PT did explain not to move my head back, but didn’t explain it this way, so I was still doing it wrong. I’d love to better understand what the exercises are actually trying to achieve!

My only thing is if someone has a disc issue, we should not be doing this. Cervical retraction is legit a disc provocation test. But everything else I agree with

You seem to be using chin tuck and cervical retraction interchangeably. A chin tuck for headaches and migraines sure, a retraction for disc reduction. Different movements

Thank you! See way too many patients do cervical retraction when the goal is upper cervical flexion with chin tucks

I was told by a marine doc that a proper chin tuck is a necessary and intentional part of standing at attention. He recommended practicing during long car trips.

This is so helpful. I told my PT I didn’t feel like I was doing it correctly because of how tense my entire neck felt but she said I was doing “just fine”. Clearly I was not. 😂
