@chasseurdesons: The calls of the Sooty Terns 🪶 While visiting a small island near Funafuti, I came across a group of Sooty Terns. Their loud, constant calls often echo across the islands, creating a soundscape that's impossible to ignore. In some places, locals have even given them nicknames: • One of the most well-known is "Wideawake" or "Wideawake Tern" an English nickname that mimics the bird’s call. • In Hawaiian, they’re called "ʻewa ʻewa." It’s an onomatopoeic term that mimics the birds’ sounds and roughly translates to "cacophony."
